90 years of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road - a journey through time, technology and nature

Article from 26.06.2025

On 25 June 2025, Grossglockner Hochalpenstrassen AG (GROHAG) celebrated a very special anniversary: the 90th anniversary of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road - the largest monument of the Republic of Austria and one of the most impressive panoramic roads in Europe.

In the stylish ambience of MOONCITY Salzburg - a centre for e-mobility - numerous guests from politics, business, tourism and long-standing companions came together to pay tribute to this important milestone.

One highlight of the evening was the exclusive screening of the new ORF documentary ‘Österreich Bild - 90 Jahre Großglockner Hochalpenstraße’, which will be broadcast on ORF 2 on 13 July 2025 at 6:30 pm. The programme takes an impressive look at the creation, development and current significance of this Alpine masterpiece.

The Second President of the National Council, Peter Haubner, himself a former marketing manager at GROHAG, also provided some special moments with his personal memories and anecdotes. His words reflected the deep connection with the region and the road.

The freshly printed anniversary brochure, which looks back over 100 years - from the vision and construction to today's role as a sustainable tourism and transport artery through the Hohe Tauern National Park, was particularly impressive.

A specialist conference on Alpine monuments took place in Heiligenblut and on the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe at the same time as the celebrations - organised by the Federal Monuments Office and GROHAG. The occasion was also the tenth anniversary of the protection of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road: it has been Austria's largest monument since 3 July 2015.

To round off the evening, the guests enjoyed regional specialities and musical entertainment from an ensemble of the Salzburg Military Band - a worthy conclusion to a festive anniversary.

Johannes Hörl, CEO GROHAG
"For 90 years, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road has stood for pioneering spirit, nature experience and economic foresight. Today, we are consistently continuing on this path with sustainability and innovation - also visible in our Glockner ePower e-charging station network and in the new anniversary brochure, which impressively documents the eventful history of this extraordinary road."

Gerd Schneider, Editor-in-Chief of ORF Salzburg
"The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is not only a monument to Alpine architecture, but also a fascinating mirror of our history. With the new “Österreich Bild”, we are telling its stories - for the whole of Austria."

Peter Haubner, Second President of the National Council
"The years at GROHAG were formative for me. Anyone who works “on and around the Grossglockner” realises every day how important it is to preserve tradition and at the same time be open to change - that is a reality here."

Reinhart Rohr, President of the Carinthian Parliament
"The Grossglockner Road is a symbol of what our country is all about: putting what unites us before what divides us. It connects Salzburg and Carinthia - and generations of people with the Alps."

Wilfried Haslauer, Governor of Salzburg and Chairman of the Supervisory Board
"The Grossglockner High Alpine Road has always been a flagship project - yesterday and today. It impressively demonstrates how sustainable tourism, technical progress and regional development can go hand in hand."

The anniversary celebration made it impressively clear: the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is more than just a road!
