Walks for families
For an easy and family-friendly trip, the Oberstattalm in the Käfertal Valley is ideal. This stroller-friendly path takes only about 20 minutes and is especially popular with children thanks to its large marmot playground. Those with more time can enjoy the Nature Experience Trail Käfertal, a 4-kilometer route with information boards and a water playground – perfect for a half-day adventure. Another option is the Piffkar circular trail, a 30-minute loop with insights into birdlife and mountain vegetation. If you’re looking for something a little different, the Fuscher Lacke circular path is an easy walk around a mountain lake with rest areas and a small exhibition about the construction of the High Alpine Road.
Easy hiking Trails
For those who enjoy a bit more walking, several easy trails await. From the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe to the Kaiserstein, a one-hour route offers not only breathtaking views but also the chance to spot marmots or ibex. Starting at the Fuschertörl, the short 30-minute climb to the Edelweißspitze leads to the highest point of the road, where an incredible 360-degree view awaits. At the Hochtor Pass, a historical educational trail (about 30 minutes) tells stories of ancient trade routes. And the Glacier Trail to the Pasterze takes you down to Austria’s largest glacier in just 30 minutes, with information panels along the way highlighting the fascinating history of glaciation.
Where to Take a Break
Scenic inns, alpine huts, and restaurants along the road offer cozy spots for a rest – from the Oberstattalm to the Tauernhaus Ferleiten and up to the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe. No matter where you stop, you’ll enjoy good food and great views.
