With the traditional “Durchstich” at the Hochtor on 24th April, an important milestone on the way to the new summer season has been reached. Despite comparatively low snow levels, difficult avalanche conditions and persistent core ice once again demanded the highest precision and exceptional skill from the experienced snow-clearing teams from Salzburg and Carinthia. Together with the new leaders of the two federal states connected by the Glockner Road, Governor Karoline Edtstadler of Salzburg and Governor Daniel Fellner of Carinthia, this special moment was marked as a visible start to the 2026 summer in the Alps.

90 years ago, on 22nd September 1934, it was possible to cross the Hohe Tauern mountain range by car for the first time. At the wheel was none other than the then governor and political visionary Franz Rehrl, accompanied by Franz Wallack, the planner and builder of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, in the passenger seat. One year before the official opening, the two pioneers ventured on the first journey along the unfinished course of the panoramic road - a daring adventure in the Alps!
