Grossglockner High Alpine Road opens in its anniversary year already before Easter - ‘Durchstich at the Hochtor’ as the starting signal for the summer season!

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road will be open again from 19th April. 2025 is a very special year - the legendary panoramic road is celebrating its 90th anniversary, has been inspiring visitors with a unique combination of nature experience, engineering skill and tourist attraction since its opening in 1935 and has also been Austria's largest monument for exactly ten years. The legendary ‘rotary ploughs - Wallack system’ have been in use for 70 years.

90 years ago, on 22nd September 1934, it was possible to cross the Hohe Tauern mountain range by car for the first time. At the wheel was none other than the then governor and political visionary Franz Rehrl, accompanied by Franz Wallack, the planner and builder of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, in the passenger seat. One year before the official opening, the two pioneers ventured on the first journey along the unfinished course of the panoramic road - a daring adventure in the Alps!
