The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is one of the most spectacular panoramic roads in Europe. Stretching across 48 kilometres with 36 bends, it leads deep into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Along the route, twelve themed exhibitions invite visitors to explore the alpine world and its many natural and cultural treasures.

90 years ago, on 22nd September 1934, it was possible to cross the Hohe Tauern mountain range by car for the first time. At the wheel was none other than the then governor and political visionary Franz Rehrl, accompanied by Franz Wallack, the planner and builder of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, in the passenger seat. One year before the official opening, the two pioneers ventured on the first journey along the unfinished course of the panoramic road - a daring adventure in the Alps!

Visitors to the visitor centre on the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe can now look forward to three very special new features: the exhibitions "Sepp Forcher - Between Words and Peaks" and "Chronology of Memories - Faces of the Großglockner" as well as the new Großglockner Cinema with a focus on Sepp Forcher and the Großglockner were officially opened today in the presence of numerous guests of honour.
