In September and October, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road shows itself from an especially clear side. The air turns crisper, the views stretch further, and the landscape along the 48 kilometres and 36 hairpin bends visibly changes colour – from golden larch forests lower down to the bare, stony grey near the summit of the pass.

With 48 kilometres, 36 bends and 12 adevnture worlds, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is a destination offering viewpoints, exhibitions, short walks, nature experiences and places to stop for refreshments. Three suggested itineraries for a short visit, a full day and a family day out.

With the traditional “Durchstich” at the Hochtor on 24th April, an important milestone on the way to the new summer season has been reached. Despite comparatively low snow levels, difficult avalanche conditions and persistent core ice once again demanded the highest precision and exceptional skill from the experienced snow-clearing teams from Salzburg and Carinthia. Together with the new leaders of the two federal states connected by the Glockner Road, Governor Karoline Edtstadler of Salzburg and Governor Daniel Fellner of Carinthia, this special moment was marked as a visible start to the 2026 summer in the Alps.

When winter slowly recedes and spring arrives in the valleys, a spectacular spectacle begins high up in the Alps: the clearing of snow from the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Every year, the challenge of clearing the huge masses of snow from the famous panoramic road is taken up again to enable an unforgettable experience of nature from the beginning of May.

In autumn 2025, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road will remain open during the autumn holidays, even beyond the national holiday. Guests and locals alike can enjoy the golden late autumn in the high mountains of the Hohe Tauern National Park at reduced rates.

On 3 August 2025, we will be celebrating a very special anniversary: the Grossglockner High Alpine Road will be 90 years old! It is an occasion that puts the impressive history of this world-famous road and its significance for the region, nature and people centre stage.
