In autumn 2025, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road will remain open during the autumn holidays, even beyond the national holiday. Guests and locals alike can enjoy the golden late autumn in the high mountains of the Hohe Tauern National Park at reduced rates.

On 3 August 2025, we will be celebrating a very special anniversary: the Grossglockner High Alpine Road will be 90 years old! It is an occasion that puts the impressive history of this world-famous road and its significance for the region, nature and people centre stage. 

Some media reported that cyclists should only use the Grossglockner High Alpine Road ‘at off-peak times’. What caused a stir in the cycling community is based on a misunderstanding. What's really behind the announcement: We asked Johannes Hörl, CEO of Grossglockner Hochalpenstrassen AG.

On 25 June 2025, Grossglockner Hochalpenstrassen AG (GROHAG) celebrated a very special anniversary: the 90th anniversary of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road - the largest monument of the Republic of Austria and one of the most impressive panoramic roads in Europe.

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is one of the most spectacular panoramic roads in Europe. Stretching across 48 kilometres with 36 bends, it leads deep into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Along the route, twelve themed exhibitions invite visitors to explore the alpine world and its many natural and cultural treasures.

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road will be open again from 19th April. 2025 is a very special year - the legendary panoramic road is celebrating its 90th anniversary, has been inspiring visitors with a unique combination of nature experience, engineering skill and tourist attraction since its opening in 1935 and has also been Austria's largest monument for exactly ten years. The legendary ‘rotary ploughs - Wallack system’ have been in use for 70 years.

When winter slowly recedes and spring arrives in the valleys, a spectacular spectacle begins high up in the Alps: the clearing of snow from the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Every year, the challenge of clearing the huge masses of snow from the famous panoramic road is taken up again to enable an unforgettable experience of nature from the beginning of May.
