The Grossglockner King’s Tour can be driven flexibly in both directions: starting either in Bruck/Fusch on the Grossglockner Road with Heiligenblut as the destination – or the other way around. Depending on where you begin, the route first takes you along the legendary Grossglockner High Alpine Road. It then continues via Fusch, Zell am See and the Salzach Valley to Mittersill, before heading along the Felbertauern Road to East Tyrol. Via Lienz, the Pustertal High Road, the Gailberg Saddle and the Iselsberg, the circular route ends in the Möll Valley near Winklern – a tour full of driving pleasure and Alpine fascination.

  • By car: magnificent driving pleasure on very well-developed roads.
  • By motorcycle: for the Glockner stage, a basic level of fitness and some mountain experience are an advantage; with preparation, it is also manageable for beginners. Due to the differences in altitude, warm, weatherproof clothing is recommended.
  • Highest point: Edelweiss Peak, 2,571 metres.
  • Special feature of the tour: the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful panoramic roads for good reason. Discounted round-trip ticket.

via Gerlos Pass

This tour across six mountain passes is packed with scenic, cultural and historical highlights. Hidden gems, churches, towns and museums, as well as impressive natural forces such as Europe’s largest waterfalls, lie along the way. The crowning finale is the Gerlos Alpine Road.

Road trip highlights and route information

The tour begins on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road with an overnight stay on the Edelweiss Peak or at the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe. After sunrise, the route descends into the Fusch Valley, continues through the Salzach Valley to Mittersill and over Pass Thurn towards Kitzbühel. Via St. Johann, Fieberbrunn, Saalfelden, Lofer and numerous winding passes, the circular route leads back to Tyrol. It continues through the Brixental Valley, the Inn Valley and into the Zillertal, with its impressive landscapes and wide panoramic views. The highlight at the end is the Gerlos Alpine Road with sweeping curves, the Durlaßboden Reservoir and the Krimml Waterfalls, before the route returns via Mittersill to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.

  • By car: apart from the partly somewhat narrow Zillertal High Road, the entire tour is excellent to drive.
  • By motorcycle: pure scenic enjoyment; most of the route follows well-developed roads. The crossing of the Glockner Road and the Zillertal High Road require some mountain experience.
  • Special feature of the tour: the harmonious and scenically unique Gerlos Alpine Road.

On this tour, starting from the Möll Valley, we cruise through the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Nockberge, where numerous Alpine huts and inns invite us to enjoy Carinthian hospitality. Via the Lungau region, we reach Salzburg’s well-known winter sports resorts and then have a choice of two options for the return journey.

Road trip highlights and route information

We leave the Glockner region via the B 107 through the Möll Valley heading south. Gentle curves follow the river, accompanied by the three-thousand-metre peaks of the Hohe Tauern and the Kreuzeck Group. Passing Winklern, Obervellach, Falkenstein and Groppenstein castles as well as Porcia Castle in Spittal, we reach Lake Millstatt and Gmünd via Seeboden. The highlight begins in Kremsbrücke: the approximately 34-kilometre-long Nockalm Road in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with 52 bends, Alpine pastures and exhibitions. The highest point is the Eisentalhöhe at 2,042 metres. The route continues via Turracher Höhe, the Mur Valley and Obertauern to Dienten and into the Salzach Valley. For the return journey, two options are available: via Bruck to the Grossglockner Road or through the Gastein Valley with the Tauern motorail.

  • Character: a true pleasure tour on well-developed roads, excellent to drive for both car and motorcycle travellers. Due to the high density of bends, a little stamina is recommended.
  • Highest point: Eisentalhöhe, Nockalm Road, 2,042 m.
  • Special feature of the tour: the unique Nockalm Road, wonderfully removed from the rest of the world.

Curve Adventure 

in the Three-Country Corner

This varied cross-border tour leads over steep Alpine passes southwards to the Italian province of Udine. In the picturesque Carinthian lake district, the Villach Alpine Road opens up magnificent views of Austria, Italy and Slovenia.

Road trip highlights and route information

From Heiligenblut, the route follows the B 107 south towards Lienz, then continues relaxed along the B 100 through the Drau Valley. After Oberdrauburg, the curve-filled driving fun begins with the Gailberg Pass and Plöcken Pass all the way to Italy. Harmonious road design, little traffic and views of the Carnic Alps characterise this section. Via Paluzza, Tolmezzo and the Sella di Cereschiatis, the Nassfeld Pass follows as the driving challenge of the route. Back in Carinthia, the route leads via Villach onto the Villach Alpine Road, with panoramic views of lakes and mountains. Via Windische Höhe, the Gail Valley and Kreuzberg Saddle, it finally returns to the Drau Valley and over the Iselsberg back to the Glockner region.

  • By motorcycle: the southern side of the Nassfeld Pass requires confident vehicle control; otherwise, pure driving pleasure.
  • Highest point: Rosstratte rest area, 1,732 m
  • Special feature of the tour: the Rosstratte on the Villach Alpine Road with relaxation loungers, stone monoliths, a Nebra sky disc and a sundial.

Felbertauern & Mittersill

If you would like to extend the circular route: travel from Heiligenblut via Lienz and on to Krimml. Krimml is a lovely place for an overnight stay – and is known for its particularly beneficial climate, which can help relieve the respiratory tract.

A full day is recommended for the Nockalm Road – with stops to enjoy the scenery and to stop off at huts and mountain inns. Bad Kleinkirchheim is a good place for the next overnight stage. To finish, the Villach Alpine Road awaits in the Dobratsch Nature Park: viewpoints with views of the Karawanken as well as the Julian and Carnic Alps, plus a visit to the Skywalk high above the rockslide area.
