Daytrip in Austria: the Dobratsch

A family day out at the adventure nature park on the Villach Alpine Road

Today, we want to introduce you to the Schmidbauer family: mum Silvia, dad Robert, twelve-year-old Jonas and baby Teresa, who will soon celebrate her first birthday. We’ll tell you what goes on during your daytrip on Austria’s alpine road near Villach and what a young family can experience on one single day out! Travelling to the pay desk in Villach-Möltschach is pretty easy with the route planner. Robert and the family reach the starting point for the drive along the 16.5 km panoramic road without any stress. Jonas is already very excited, because he absolutely wants to become a dinosaur researcher and needs to see and touch the fossils on the Dobratsch today. Mum Silvia studies the route map and selects a hut for lunch.

And here we go: family daytrip to Dobratsch nature park in Carinthia

Robert likes the fact that the ticket price is calculated per car and not per person: up to eight persons plus driver can explore the Villach Alpine Road for the same price. The drive is even for free for holders of the Kärnten Card! After a quick journey uphill, the Waldrast is reached quickly, where the entire family enjoys the amazing view of the Julian Alps and the Karawanks. Jonas has discovered a castle ruin below him and mum Silvia tells him about the atmospheric concert she attended there last summer with Robert. Baby Teresa is still napping by the time they arrive at the Alpengarten at 1,483 m. Jonas browses through the name tags looking for plants that he knows from biology class, and mum Silvia marvels at the abundant sea of alpine flowers.

Break at the Aichingerhütte with playground, shop and exhibition

After a visit to the Alpengarten, it’s time for cool refreshment and lots of exercise at the playground. The Schmidbauer family stops at the mountain inn Aichingerhütte at an altitude of 1,650 m, where the parents enjoy a cup of coffee and the delightful panoramic view of the lake, while Jonas discovers the playground. Afterwards, they all visit the exhibition “Herrscher der Lüfte – die Vogelwelt des Naturparks Dobratsch” (Eng. “Rulers of the skies – bird life of Dobratsch nature park”) with numerous interactive stations, the nature park information point and the shop. Jonas wants to remember exactly how to differentiate between various birds of prey from the ground in the future!

Family adventure site Rosstratte: geological trail, playground and Carinthian delicacies

Late in the morning, the four holidaymakers arrive on the Rosstratte, the final stop of the Villach Alpine Road. The car takes a break on the large car park, while Jonas makes a beeline towards the geological trail. Now he can finally admire the fossilised auger shells from the primal ocean Tethys, which got to the summit of the Dobratsch millions of years ago thanks to unbelievable powers within the earth. Teresa has finally woken up and walks across the mountain pasture next to the educational trail in small steps holding mum’s hands – that tickles! Dad Robert sees a few motorcyclists arriving at the Rosstratte car park and thinks to himself: “That’d be something for a right boys’ outing!” While he’s still lost in thought, Silvia shows him the large birds of prey majestically circling above them.

There’s even more to discover on the Rosstratte for the Schmidbauer family:

•    View plateau: a short, flat walkway that Teresa can cover in her buggy leads to the platform opening up a beautiful panoramic view beyond compare.

•    Adventure playground: here Jonas can exercise, run about, balance and play to his heart’s content. Little Teresa joyously scuttles about under mum Silvia’s watchful eyes!

•    Rosstrattenstüberl mountain inn: culinary wishes of young guests are naturally fulfilled and Silvia can change baby Teresa’s nappy and feed her without being disturbed.

Family summit hiking trail: highlight of your daytrip in Austria

A wide path leads from the Rosstratte upwards to the Dobratsch summit. Robert puts Teresa into the back carrier, that’s more comfortable for him now. Together, they hike across mountain pastures up to the Dobratsch summit house, where Jonas wants to know everything about the great solar plant. Mom Silvia and Teresa enjoy a small break on the sun terrace, while dad Robert and Jonas are ready to storm the summit. Jonas needs to see the two ancient churches that can be found on the Dobratsch summit! He has a lot to talk about after returning – about the smelling stone, the beautiful stucco and the transmitter tower. Over homemade cake and cool refreshments, everyone agrees that they will certainly be back soon.

Surprise your loved ones with a one-of-a-kind daytrip to Austria’s adventure mountain Dobratsch – see you soon in Carinthia!
