For summiteers: hiking trails to the Dobratsch summit cross

Two very different hiking trails lead from the Rosstratte car park, the final stage of the Villach Alpine Road, through the mountain pasture region to the summit of the Dobratsch. While the meadow path is also suitable for untrained mountain walkers, the Jägersteig is recommended for sure-footed and experienced hikers.

•    Option 1 “easy” across the Elfernock to the German and the Wendish church
Length 8.2 km | walking time 3 hours (there and back) | altitude metres 424

Hiking trail number 291 leads from the Rosstratte car park up to the summit of the Dobratsch at 2,167 m above sea level on an easily manageable route. Stop option: Dobratsch summit house. Tip: visit the two highest pilgrimage churches in the Eastern Alps!

•    Option 2 “sure-footed” across the Jägersteig to the Dobratsch summit
Length 4.3 km | walking time 3 hours | altitude metres 434

The Jägersteig also starts at the Rosstratte car park. First follow the tarmacked roadway past the Rosstrattenstüberl, then the gravel path. The narrow Jägersteig branches off at the first sharp right turn. It constantly runs up and down, with exposed and steep spots in places, and affords great views of the Gailtal and the Julian Alps. Reach the summit cross via the Dobratsch summit house.

Hiking on the Dobratsch: from the Aichingerhütte to the Gamsblick

This varied hiking tour near Villach leads you from the Aichingerhütte, where you can park your car for free (car park P8), to the spectacular panoramic Gamsblick lookout platform. The easily walkable hiking trail requires neither a special level of fitness nor technique – and still you’re rewarded with the most beautiful clear views of numerous summits. The 2.7 km route, on which you cover 134 altitude metres, leads you to your destination within a 50-minute walk. The way back to the Aichingerhütte takes you via the same path. This hike is also particularly suited to families with children. Talking about children, you need to factor in checking out the two adventure playgrounds along the Villach Alpine Road during your hiking day!

Adventure playgrounds: hiking and fun on the Villach Alpine Road

Children can play, climb and go wild as much as they want at the Aichingerhütte and on the Rosstratte, while their parents enjoy a break on one of the sun terraces in close proximity. Beyond the playground, the Aichingerhütte also features a fascinating exhibition about bird life at Dobratsch nature park. Exercise is key at the Rosstratte adventure playground, which blends well into the hilly terrain: lookout towers, slides, climbing nets, a tunnel system and Flying Fox are the best thing ever for children! Along the way, they will learn a lot about the trees and animals on the Dobratsch. The geological path “Vom Meer zum Berg” (Eng. “From Sea to Mountain”) needs to be discovered as well. As you can see, there’s a lot along the Villach Alpine Road – just no boredom!

Conduct in the alpine pasture areas

The Villach Alpine Road is located in an alpine pasture area; sometimes the road goes directly across pastureland. Drivers and cyclists must proceed with particular caution and with a correspondingly reduced speed. Free-range grazing livestock (e.g. sheep) or even wild animals (e.g. especially in blind curves) must be expected at any time!
