Adventure Villach Alpine Road, 11 lookout points, Alpengarten and Rosstratte

Four turns leading quickly up high are waiting for car drivers and bikers right at the beginning of the mountain road. It winds along the brim of the Dobratsch on a wide route leading through an area of great geographical interest. The forest gives way to ample mountain meadows and rocks in the higher part of the route opening up far-reaching, clear views!
•    The Arenablick lookout platform is located at turn 2. Enjoy the view of the ski-jump at the modern Nordic performance centre, where professional and amateur athletes can train throughout the entire year.

•    Reach the Aussichtsrast (P1) at an altitude of 770 m after four turns in short succession. Enjoy a stop at the cosy rest stop with large relaxation area!

•    Your next destination is the P2 car park, also known as Stadt- und Seenblick. Experience the divine view of the city of Villach, Austria’s seventh-largest city, located at the confluence of Drau and Gail on the western border of the Klagenfurter Becken, from an altitude of 862 m. Numerous lakes are located in close proximity to the 60,000-inhabitant city.
•    After conquering another 100 altitude metres, you will reach the Waldrast at 965 m (P3). The idyllic rest stop is located in the middle of a mixed forest affording views of the castle ruin Finkenstein above Lake Faak. The castle first documented in the mid-12th century now serves as a venue for festival performances.

•    Now you’ve crossed the 1000 altitude metres mark and reach the P4 car park Schüttblick. The view of the rockslide area Schütt, which developed after a large earthquake thousands of years ago, is just as impressive as the view of the Julian Alps and numerous summits of the Karawanks.

•    Find one of the absolute highlights of the Villach Alpine Road at an altitude of 1,307 m, the Dreiländerblick (P5)! The panorama stretches across Austria, Slovenia and Italy!
•    Now you’re nearing a very special world, the Alpengarten (P6) located at 1,483 m above sea level. Around 800 alpine plants from three different climate zones are looked after by volunteers on an area of 10,000 m². Almost half of the plants are in their natural habitat, and so you’re in the middle of a genuine natural garden here! The Alpengarten is open every day from 9 am to 6 pm from early June to late August (separate entry). Plan an hour for a visit!

•    The next stop along the Villach Alpine Road is waiting for you at the P6 car park. The Rote Wand lookout platform offers you a grand view of the abyss of the reddish rock face and a breathtaking clear view of the Karawanks and Julian Alps. Enormous rockslides created this unique spectacle at the southern face of the Dobratsch!
•    Having arrived at the mountain inn Aichingerhütte at 1,650 m above sea level, you’re already in the mountain pasture area of the Dobratsch. Here you can visit the exhibition “Herrscher der Lüfte – die Vogelwelt des Naturparks Dobratsch” (Eng. “Rulers of the skies – bird life of Dobratsch nature park”) with its many interactive stations and the nature park information point with shop. Enjoy the beautiful panoramic view of numerous lakes!
•    Now you’ve reached your destination, the Rosstratte! The P11 car park at an altitude of 1,732 is the final stage of the Villach Alpine Road. The free "Sonnenwege" observation station illustrates the historical methods of time recording: the clock and calendar are superfluous if the sun is in the sky. While small children will love the adventure playground, older kids can learn interesting facts about the origin of the Dobratsch on the geology path “Vom Meer zum Berg” (Eng. “From Sea to Mountain”). The mountain inn Rosstrattenstüberl serves delicacies from the Carinthian cuisine for all ages!
•    Walk up the road or the Jägersteig to the Dobratsch summit (2,167 m) with the Dobratsch summit house (walking time approx. 90 min). Visit two of the highest pilgrimage churches of the Eastern Alps and let yourself be spoiled by the innkeepers on the sun terrace! The panoramic summit path with the spectacular chamois and summit view platform (approx. 20 min walk from P11).
